Seabiscuit

Before I get into the actual content of this movie, this was the first premiere that I had ever been to. My date and myself got all gussied up and got to walk on the red carpet, sip champagne and eat good whores-devors (that's how I'm spelling it because I'm to lazy to look it up). I believe that my date and myself where the only ones there making under forty thousand dollars a year, and those that were there where doing very well in life. After seeing many bad dresses and many more old men with younger women, we made our way into the theater to see the movie. After an hour of richies patting themselves on the back for various charities, the movie started. I've heard that this book was good, and the movie was ok, but if you are going to have a David and Goliath, Rocky or Karate Kid movie, you need to have a villan. There was no villian. The only attempt at a villan was War Admiral and his bloated, white, plutocrat owner that was mad to look like the "evil capitalist" even though Jeff Bridge's character was just as rich or richer. The racing scene's were exciting, the photography was good and the acting was ok, but it didn't grab me. I did think that Chris Cooper's character of the zen master type trainer was interesting and will probably be nominated for an award. A pretty good film, but if you want to wait for the DVD, you won't miss much...

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

I had very high hopes for this movie. I had read the graphic novels and enjoyed them, and the previews looked great. After about two weeks of coming attractions, we settled into watch the movie. All in all, I liked it. There were some very gaping plot holes that were not explained, but will probably be in the sequel. The combination of characters worked, as well as the edition of two more characters that were not in the novels, Tom Sawyer and Dorian Grey (who was quite the hottie). The mix of CGI and live action worked out well, and since we all have to worry about movies looking too much like video games these days, LOXG did pretty well. I also enjoyed the combination of literary characters.

Finding Nemo

I have seen this movie two times and plan to see it again tonight. This is one of those movies that everytime you watch it, you see something different. Dodd once told me that "Pixar is just showing off" when they create all the intricate and beautiful details to their animation. I would have to agree. Pixar does a wonderful adaptation of the Great Barrier Reef and all the fish in it. The plot is cute and Albert Brooks plays a suprisingly good clown fish. Another interesting voice that pops up in this film is William Dafoe, which is a nice change for him from the Green Goblin. All in all, a wonderful film that should be seen on the big screen, but will make a nice addition to any DVD collection, especially if the person has a nice big screen TV. The one drawback that I would have to this movie would be the sea turtle segment. I'm not sure that Jeff Spicoli-voice was the best choice for the seaturtles, but they were 150 years old, so maybe they are behind in language. O well, what do I know...

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl

YAAAAR!! MATEE!!! Ok, just had to get that out of the way before I lanch into this review. I was having a conversation the other day with a friend about the concept of the "pirate movie". I held the point that Geena Davis and company ruined the genera by blessing us with the slop bucket that was "Cutthroat Island". Robin Williams and others didn't help it out much with that retched Peter Pan movie.
However, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl was a step in the right direction for the genera and for the director...errr, producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. Bruckheimer's work as of late has been silly and cheesy, but I believe that this is a good step on the road to recovery. Also nice to see not taking himself so seriously but still playing a good role, is Johnny Depp. He adds enough humor and intelligence to make the movie and Orlando Bloom sparkle. The always interesting Geoffry Rush adds the element of the stereotypical pirate capitan, but does it well. All in all, a suprisingly good movie, one that I didn't expect to like but I'm glad that I do.

28 Days Later

Let me first say that I was really looking forward to this movie. I bought the Fangoria magazine that hyped it on the cover, and I was hopefully that I would see something really new and different in the horror movie world. Yea Right. New and different in the horror movie world is like the dinosaur. Its extinct, and it won't come back. That being said, I kind of liked this movie. Even though the quick pans and flash shots got a bit old after a while, and every actor looked like they would at any moment burst into songs by Radiohead, it wasn't bad. They didn't go much into the virus that infected the populus of Britian, which I believe that they should have, but this virus ran through the Isles in about 28 days. Enter our hero, Jim. Jim has been unconcious for 28 days, through an unrelated accident. He awakens naked (yes, we see the forest, including the tree). Apon waking up, he stumbles around the hospital, finds clothes (thank god) and exits onto the streets of London, which are empty. After wandering around for hours screaming "Hello!" way to much, he rambles into a church, where he gets his first taste of the infected. Now the infected aren't all that impresive in the costum department. They have funky contact lenses and grunt, run and spew blood, but thats about it. They chase Jim into the streets where he is saved by two characters, one named Selena. Selena and Jim basically run through London trying to avoid infected and going to Jim's home where his family are dead and the second character in the group is killed. In their search for survivors, they come apon a father and daughter team that has survived the initial infection. They have discoverd a radio signal that prompts them to leave London and head to Manchester to meet up with a military group that claims to have the answer to infection. In Manchester, the military unit seems to have a large manor house secure and seem to be in controll of their situation, but the commander has promised the troops women (Selena and daughter, Hannah) to have their way with. The last 45 minutes are interesting, but filled with many logical holes. All in all, not a bad movie, but in my biased opinion, I would wait for Village 8 or video.

Quick Intro

Since I watch a lot of movies, I'm going to start reviewing them. Most movies are fair game, so if its not current, don't worry about it.
